Learn Russian in Russia

Russia is getting ready for the most important religious event of the year: Orthodox Easter. It marks the end of seven weeks of Lent, during which time Orthodox believers don’t eat animal products, such as meat and milk. Fish is only allowed twice and total refusal of food is welcomed on some days.

A lot of traditional celebration takes place in homes and churches. For religious folk this holiday is full of sacred meaning, while others pay tribute to their Orthodox upbringing and dye eggs and cook special food because it’s tradition.

The day before Easter Russians bake special Easter cakes (kulich), make curd cake called paskha (this dish bears the original name of the holiday in Russian) and paint eggs (krashenki).

Then they go to midnight mass, and on Sunday they visit the cemetery and have a dinner that consists of all these traditional dishes. Friends and families exchange painted eggs and greet each other with the words “Christ has risen.” The answer is: “Truly He has risen.”

To experience life in Russia for yourself, why not try a Russian language course in either Moscow or St Petersburg?

I visited Russia myself in communist times when St Petersburg was still called Leningrad and queuing for bread was the norm. I found it one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been lucky enough to visit and urge you to try and take in both Moscow and St Petersburg as the two cities are both distinctive and give you a broader appreciation of Russia than just visiting Moscow for example.

We offer a fantastic Russian course in both Moscow and St Petersburg; you can even split your time learning Russian between the two locations. To really get you off the tourist trail to experience the true Russia the language school organises cultural exchanges between Russians and those learning Russian. It’s a great way to get to know the locals in a social situation and practice your Russian.

Learn Russian in Russia and experience this truly fascinating country for yourself.
