Visit Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot

cooking_holiday_puglia_-_ocean_viewThese days Italy’s cities are inundated with tourists, and it’s no surprise why. But sometimes a ‘getaway’ requires a place which is isolated from the hustle and bustle of tourist-laden cities. This is the cue for Puglia to excite you with its age-old history and hidden charms.

Secluded in southern Italy’s coast, Puglia is a great alternative to its busier counterparts. Adorned with olive trees and whitewashed hill towns, even taking a stroll down the street is a treat when holidaying here.

Puglia’s architecture reflects its varied history. Once upon a time, it was subject to the invasion of the Byzantine, Arab, Balkan and Roman empires during different time-periods. However, it is the Greek influence that dominates this region.

White is a prominent colour for the houses and buildings because it reflects the sun beautifully. Ostuni, for example, is a city located between Bari and Brindisi and it is known as the “White City” due to its white walls and typically white-painted architecture. Ostuni’s largest buildings include its Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, visits to which shouldn’t go amiss as they truly are architectural jewels.

Guided tours are available and give you an insight into the origins of these caves. You’ll also be amazed at the relatively low temperatures here, which is sure to be a relief. Puglia is also home to the Trulli – limestone houses with cone-shaped roofs that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy-tale. Alberobello is filled with these unusual dwellings and many owners are happy to give you a tour if you ask with a smile.

Much of Italy’s pasta was produced in this region back in the day, and Puglia still produces majority of Italy’s olive oil. Therefore, the cuisine here is very authentic and something to enjoy, especially during lunchtime, when even most businesses and shops close between 13.00-16.30 to indulge in a slice or two of pizza.

Puglia awaits with a more authentic taste of Italian culture, sun-drenched vistas and an overload of impressive architecture and history. A piece of advice: opt for the side streets for a truly local experience.
