Top singles holidays for Christmas and New Year 2018

Do you often get to 1st January and feel exhausted wondering Christmas can’t be more relaxing and enjoyable? Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE Christmas but it’s time to make time for yourself and use your holiday time to actually have a holiday.

So why not make this Christmas all about you for a change? We’ve compiled a list of the best solos holidays for this Christmas and New Year. Learn something new or indulge your passion for an interest you never get time for at home. Sit back and let someone else take care of the plans for you. You’ll thank us for it.

So, for 2018, here are our top holiday suggestions for Christmas and/or New Year.

1. Swap cold and grey for warm and sunny on a surf holiday in Tamraght, Morocco

Surfers waving to camera while in the seaThrow out all traditional ideas of December and hit the beach instead! Instead being plonked in front of the TV watching Christmas specials, you’ll be hitting the waves and getting some much needed vitamin D on this surfing holiday in Morocco. Or why not combine surf with yoga as well?

You won’t miss the cheer and the chance to indulge in delicious food as you can still have the turkey if you are there on Christmas Day. The only difference is you’ll be eating in front of the Atlantic Ocean rather than a raging fire.

And if it is New Year you want to travel, join your fellow surfers to bring in the New Year with a raging BBQ and live music. This holiday without doubt beat any New Year you’ve had!

2. Double up on Christmas with this Italian Christmas cookery holiday in Tuscany, Italy

Lee putting pizza in oven on cooking holiday in TuscanyMake the most of Christmas with your traditional Christmas at home, then fly to Pisa on Boxing Day to experience the best of both worlds.

Italians celebrate on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas Day and during your time in Italy, you will be recreating a complete Tuscan Christmas Eve dinner, along with a Christmas lunch during the week. Perfect for those that can’t get enough holiday cheer, food, and of course, spirits!

Learn to cook delicious regional specialities from the Christmas period including various antipasti, a traditional fish based meal including Baccala, tortelli al ragu, homemade pasta, various meats, and a vegetable pie. For dessert, chef Rita will be teaching you to make Befana biscuits (a little biscuit with almond filling), a speciality from the town of Barga in Tuscany were your cooking holiday takes place. Rita uses her mother’s recipe and you will be taking some home with you, so leave some room in your bag!

In addition to the hands-on time in the kitchen (and wine bar!), you’ll be visiting the various gems around the area; Castelnuovo, Lucca and Pisa, where you can find some Christmas spirit in the medieval towns.

Then bring in the New Year with a bang in a local restaurant for a massive 4 course Tuscan meal, followed by dancing with wine flowing. This is the ultimate foodie holiday for those who don’t want Christmas to end!

3. Activity filled adventure on Jaco Beach in Costa Rica

Why not make the most of your time away by combining your hobbies or even picking up a new one? This wonderful school (we use the term lightly!) by the beach in Costa Rica gives guests the chance to brush up on their Spanish, photography, surfing and yoga, and you will without doubt have your holiday parties thrown into the mix!

Whatever you choose to learn (students combine two activities), this time of year is a wonderful time to visit, as it has a very festive environment with shops, restaurants, and many houses decorated with lights, wreaths, and nativity scenes.

Lots of the locals tend to head to midnight mass, then follow it with tamales, rum punch and eggnog – this is Christmas the Costa Rican way. Pura vida! New Year’s Eve is a time for families and locals to hit the beach for fireworks and an unforgettable night out, so why not visit Costa Rica at this unique time of year?

4. Unwind & detox or re-energise & replenish on a yoga retreat on Spain’s Costa Blanca

So, over the New Year, one of our most popular wellness retreats will be adding a few New Year Spanish traditions for the ultimate wellbeing getaway.

The New Year programme will run as usual, including the daily yoga, hikes, workshops & exercise, however, on New Year’s Eve, be prepared to join in the fun and welcome in 2019.

The evening will be packed with special activities; you can join in a quiz, a gratitude game, and light a fire puja all with live music. You’ll be up for the Spanish New Year countdown with the traditional 12 grapes (you’ll need to google this, or go see for yourself, but I hear it is lucky to wear red knickers), and head to the roof terrace to watch the local firework display with new friends.

As for the rest of your stay, you can take part is as many classes as you wish, or take a break to relax and head down to the beach. Escape to this retreat anytime up until 14 December or arrive after the 28th of December.

5. Brush up on your language skills during a home language immersion holiday

The holiday season is a great time to immerse yourself in a language and culture, as you’ll be experiencing the best meals and traditions that the culture has to offer.

Whatever language you want to learn, you’ll receive as many private lessons you would like to cram in during your week as well as all meals & accommodation with your language teacher come host.

They will also make you part of the family, so you can join in on family activities. Let us know how you would like your December experience – if you feel it will be enhanced by pets, children, big family gatherings, or if you would prefer a quiet and quaint one, let us know, and we will start finding you the perfect language holiday for you.

6. Kick start the New Year with fitness and detox by the beach in Krabi, Thailand

retreat guests raise a glass of juice togetherLook, we know you are fabulous and deserve everything you indulged in over the holidays but we also know that after Christmas comes the time for detoxing and wellness. So if you really do feel the need to get your body and mind back on track, and maybe even shed some inches, this is our go-to wellness break.

Joining this fitness and detox holiday either during or after the Christmas season can help you reboot your wellness routine or begin a new journey towards your overall health and fitness. Rather than champagne and mince pies, you’ll be sipping on juices that are spiced up with nutmeg, cinnamon and other rich flavors.

During the Christmas season, join the locals as they do something special and outreach to serve the community surrounding them by playing lots of games, having fun teaching basic English, and sharing the Christmas spirit through stories, gifts and company.
