Coimbra has taught Portuguese to international students for generations, and the university still publishes several formats. The right one depends less on the institution’s name than on the time you can genuinely give it.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities separates its annual route from holiday courses and the intensive courses offered around September and January. Treat the annual route as a substantial academic commitment. If you are visiting for days or weeks, start with the holiday or intensive calendar and confirm that your level and dates are open.
Whichever format you choose, your first class should include a speaking task, focused correction and another attempt. Ask how placement works, how many taught hours you receive and how speaking turns are shared. Cultural activities can add context, but they should not quietly replace language teaching.
Coimbra is compact enough for a prepared task after class. Try a polite question in a shop or describe one object you have just seen, then bring the difficult phrase back to the teacher. That small loop—prepare, speak, correct, repeat—is where the city becomes useful.
