The Tagus gives Lisbon a genuine sailing classroom. The river is broad and visually dramatic, but scenery alone does not turn a cruise into instruction.
Your role on the boat
A first lesson should cover safety and assign you a real task: steering to a heading, trimming a sail, handling a line or practising a tack. The instructor watches the attempt, corrects it and gives you another turn. In a small group, ask how active time is shared rather than assuming everyone will handle the boat.

Check the school or instructor, vessel, departure marina, lesson duration and weather policy. “Sailing experience” can mean anything from a certified course to a skipper-led sunset trip. A glass in hand and a few minutes at the helm are not tuition.
Wind, tide and traffic change the lesson. A responsible instructor adapts the manoeuvre or stays ashore when necessary. Build flexibility into the day and keep any river sightseeing separate from the taught hours.
