Málaga is both a city name and a province label. That matters here. The current residential programme used in this guide is in Cómpeta, in the Axarquía, less than 50 kilometres from Málaga city. Current city evidence supports regular studio classes, not a residential retreat. Neither format should borrow the other’s location or inclusions.
Choose the format before the scenery
The published Cómpeta programme is a residential summer stay at Hotel Balcón de Cómpeta. Its outline includes morning meditation, asana and pranayama, plus afternoon teaching and another asana session. Dates are flexible within the published 2026 season, with a minimum stay. That timetable belongs to the Cómpeta retreat. If you stay in Málaga city, plan a separate journey.
In Málaga city, a current studio publishes 90-minute Hatha group classes and one-to-one sessions at a named city address. You could build an urban learning stay by booking classes and accommodation separately. Call it a class-based city break unless the same organiser publishes a residential programme with dates, teaching and lodging.
Whichever format you choose, ask how the teacher establishes your level, what is repeated across sessions and how adaptations are offered. A useful first class gives you a specific cue or alternative and time to try it again. A timetable proves scheduled practice; it does not by itself prove individual feedback, so confirm that directly.
Plan for the exact municipality
Cómpeta is an Axarquía municipality inland from the coast. The retreat source places it 18 kilometres from the coast and less than 50 kilometres from Málaga city. Confirm the full hotel address, arrival point, transfer time and what happens if you arrive after the first scheduled class. Do not plan it as a walkable city-centre stay.
A city studio has a different shape. Ask for the exact class address and book a room that makes the scheduled journey realistic. Málaga’s museums, markets and seafront can fit around regular classes, while a Cómpeta stay may organise meals and free time around the residential timetable. The province contains both choices; it does not make them interchangeable.
Count teaching separately from the stay
Meditation, asana, pranayama and a workshop are taught or guided programme time. A room, vegetarian meals, a pool and optional excursions support the residential stay but are not yoga lessons. Hiking may be guided activity, but it is not yoga tuition. Count each component under its real purpose before comparing prices.
The Cómpeta programme also lists specialist weeks and teacher-focused study. Check the exact dates and audience. A visitor retreat should not be described through the curriculum or expected commitment of teacher training.
Plan for the actual weather
Use the forecast for the municipality where you will actually practise. For Cómpeta, ask whether each session uses the outdoor platform or the air-conditioned room, and what changes in heat, wind or rain. The plan should also cover shade, water, the practice surface and rest between sessions.
Málaga province supplies the two possible settings. The teacher, timetable, feedback and chance to repeat a skill are what turn either one into learning.
