Morocco gives surfers a long Atlantic coastline, warm hospitality and enough different breaks to keep beginners, improvers and confident surfers busy. The clever part is choosing a camp for your learning level, not for the rooftop photograph.
In Morocco, the ocean sets the timetable. A good coach explains the plan before breakfast—and changes it when the sea disagrees.

Lesson, coaching, guiding or camp?
These products are not interchangeable:
- Surf lesson: instruction for a defined session, usually suited to beginners.
- Surf coaching: repeated feedback, video analysis or technique work for improvers.
- Surf guiding: help choosing and reaching breaks; not automatically instruction.
- Surf camp: accommodation plus some combination of lessons, equipment, transport and meals.
Ask for the daily schedule in writing. “Seven-night surf camp” can mean five coached sessions, or it can mean a board leaning beside the door and a driver pointing towards the beach.
What beginners should expect
A useful first lesson covers beach safety, board handling, position, paddling, pop-up mechanics and how to enter and leave the water. The coach should choose a suitable area, manage the group and give individual feedback.
Progress is not measured only by standing up. Reading white water, controlling the board and knowing when not to paddle out are valuable beginner skills. Ask how many learners share one coach and whether the group is split by ability.
What improvers should ask for
If you already catch unbroken waves, tell the coach exactly what you can do. Your sessions might work on wave choice, positioning, timing, turns or paddling efficiency. Video feedback can help you see habits that are difficult to feel in the water.
Find out whether the coach enters the water, watches from shore or alternates between both. You should also know how feedback is delivered and whether you receive footage or notes.
Season and conditions
Atlantic conditions vary by swell, wind, tide and break. Autumn through spring often brings more consistent swell to the Taghazout area, while summer may suit beginners at protected or smaller beaches. Essaouira’s wind can be excellent for wind sports and challenging for some surf plans.
These are planning patterns, not promises. The school should choose the day’s beach according to your level and current conditions. A fixed itinerary written months earlier is less important than a suitable decision on the morning.
The package should explain whether your board, wetsuit, leash and daily transport are included. Find out how equipment changes as you progress, where gear is stored and how repairs or losses are handled.
Camp duration is not water time. A solid day may include transport, warm-up, one coached session, lunch, free practice and review. Ask how much is supervised, what happens on unsafe days and whether a non-surf learning option replaces the session.
Safety and the alcohol-free programme policy
Ask about instructor qualifications, first aid, emergency planning, learner-to-coach ratio and how conditions are assessed. Tell the camp about swimming confidence, injuries and medical needs before arrival. Travel insurance should cover the exact activity.
