Photography workshops in Morocco

Morocco gives photographers geometry, coast, desert, mountain, street life and some very confident blue walls. The country does not exist as a free studio. A good workshop teaches you to see more carefully and to photograph people and working places with permission.

Choose the base by visual problem

Photo walk or workshop?

A photo walk may guide you to locations. A workshop should teach, observe your decisions and review results. Ask how much time is spent on briefing, shooting and critique.

Useful instruction might cover exposure, focus, composition, lenses, movement or visual storytelling. A strong teacher gives you one task, watches how you approach it and discusses the images afterwards. Simply following a guide with a camera is not the same learning sequence.

Consent is part of the craft

Do not assume a market trader, artisan, child or resident wants to be photographed. Ask, accept “no” gracefully and avoid blocking work. A guide cannot grant another person’s consent.

Workshops should explain when to ask before raising the camera, how to handle portraits and whether a fee or purchase is expected. Children require particular care and guardian permission. Private homes, religious spaces and working studios may set their own rules.

Photography without consent is not braver street work. It is just rude in a faster shutter speed.

What beginners should bring

You can learn with a phone, compact camera or interchangeable-lens camera when the teacher supports that tool. Ask whether the course assumes manual controls and whether spare batteries, storage and a simple cloth are needed.

Desert and coastal settings add sand, dust, salt and wind. Avoid changing lenses in exposed conditions where possible. For night work, confirm tripod availability, safe access and return transport.

Timing, heat and access

Early and late light can be productive, but exact timing changes by season. A sunrise meeting creates transport and safety questions; an evening medina session needs a clear finish point.

Walking workshops should state distance, steps, surfaces and rest stops. Ask whether the teacher can adapt the route without losing the lesson. In summer heat, a shorter outdoor session plus indoor review may teach more than a heroic midday march.

Feedback is where learning becomes visible

Ask whether image review is included and how it happens. A useful critique is specific: what you intended, what the frame communicates and what to try next. It should not become a competition for the most expensive camera.

For multi-day workshops, look for repeated assignments and editing. You should see the difference between your first and later work—not simply return with more files.

• Is the entire programme alcohol-free?
